If one counted up all the non-evangelical homeschoolers the total would greatly outnumber the fundamentalists.
I'd be interested in seeing those statistics. Can you point me toward your source on that?

Please tell the McCain/Palin Campaign (preferrably politely) why teaching creationism in our public schools around America is superstitious and is not in our nation's best interests. These are the feelers McCain has out there, the way in which Americans can have a voice and be heard by his campaign:

Contact his campaign directly here:

http://www.johnmccain.com/Contact/

Or go to his blogs and leave a polite message about the subject matter wherever appropriate:

http://www.johnmccain.com/blog/

Remember, McCain does a lot of things right and is a great heroic war veteran who genuinely puts his country first, but Creationism is one key area where he is completely wrong and could potentially create a major setback for American students and businesses. We can't let America fall behind foriegn countries in the departments of Science and Technology because of his superstitious beliefs.

Hi

I just wanted to clarify that we are talking about physical abuse from religious parents who believe in the pearls book. As many Fundamentalist Christians homeschool there is a link between homeschooling and abuse. I think what needs to be clarified is that I am talking about physical abuse and not sexual abuse.

Cheers

Thanks for putting the logic so succintly. I looked up some of the reviews expecting raver words than I could spout. Was disappointed to find none and then decided to look up good ol blogs..
It brings a lump the size of a football in my throat whenever I think of it.

These are two pages from my non-religious homeschool site. I have been banned from forums, referred to as the devil and received numerous abusive, intimidating and threatening emails. Thankfully I also had letters of support from other homeschoolers who had disagreed with the Christian Fundamentalists and been really horribly abused.

The accusations against me have been really slanderous, but I won't be bullied into not stating my point of view. It is nice to see someone else has spoken out. I am afraid to say we are a minority.

Thank you
Kate Gibbons

Blog Owner's Note: I removed the links given in this comment because the wording used in some of the content implies a correlation between child abuse and homeschooling. I agree that the Pearl's books are harmful, vile publications that should never be used as guides for raising children, but I cannot support the dissemination of any material that suggests as a group homeschoolers are generally abusive to their children. Child abuse is NOT a homeschooling issue, it's a social issue. Educational method - be it homeschooling, public school, or private school - isn't an indicator of abuse. There is no educational setting that guarantees against abuse. What we are talking about in regard to the Pearls has little to do with education and everything to do with religion. The parents' religious beliefs are the #1 factor. Fundamentalist Christians are more likely to follow the Pearl's advice than families with different beliefs. Some of the people who agree with the Pearls may indeed be educating their children at home, but their religion is heart of this issue, not homeschooling.

You've got it exactly right. It's interesting that most critics didn't get this. One other thing I noticed was the mother's use of the F-word while talking to the daughter. Using such coarse language to such a young child would have been out of character for such a devoted, caring mother. Also, the daughter's indifferent reaction was inconsistent with her precocious demeanor. Sure, such a girl would have immediately reacted to the profanity and commented on it. This was just another subtle way that the director conveyed that the mother wasn't actually interacting with the daughter but only cherishing the memory of her. It's a great scene.

Just as a supportive comment, and a completely anecdotal statement, we are an unschooling family with two athiest parents. David (dh) and I used to joke that we'd have to homeschool just to teach the kids evolution, as they certainly wouldn't figure it out at public school in the US And then we went and unschooled and now Linnaea talks about how the maggots that became flies evolved--gotta love Pokemon (really I love Pokemon, but it isn't change over time) and they learn all over the place about natural processes.

The anecdotal experience, the balance of religious and secular home-educators in the UK seems to be very different division than there is in the US And while I avoid groups with a religious remit, there are no where near as many here as I had to weave and dodge in the U.S. More people seem to be choosing to home-educate as a lifestyle choice or a response to bullying or the special needs of their child than as a religious choice, but the UK is far from the religious nation that the US is.

Hi. I found this link through a link to my blog. It may be news to you, but there are countless Bible believing Christians who hate the Pearls "Ministry" as much as you do! (Myself included) I have written a critique about To Be His Helpmeet and have advised people to boycott their books. Their advice in To Train Up A Child is garbage as well.

When I wrote the critique for another blog's owner, I expected a lot of flack as thousands of Christians view them as God and their words as gospel. Imagine my surprise when I found as many as are FOR them there are just as many AGAINST them!

My blog is a call for balance in living- something the Pearls and those who try to emulate them, lack.

This is probably the only place where we can agree on something! LOL

Writing to you in the mutual love of kids and peace,

Glenys

I'm in Seattle. I've lived here all my life. I was 19 when Singles came out and remember how awesome it was back then. Seattle has changed a little bit. I'm a musician and can tell you the music scene in Seattle has been lacking since 2002. Old apartment buildings are going down and being replaced with new condos. Since the movie, Seattle has experienced a couple earthquakes and it devistated one of the clubs (the one where Soundgarden played is no longer)Seattle is beautiful still. You should definately come visit.

To all interested moms out there:

I would like to invite you to participate in a research study of parenting views and practices. Dr. Kim White-Mills and Dr. Catherine Dobris of IUPUI (both are moms) are interested in understanding what sources parents find useful in their parenting practices, how parents use different parenting information, and what views parents across the county hold regarding parenting issues.

To access this survey, go to http://www.iupui.edu/~momviews/

haha....the church I used to go to used Ray Comforts videos very frequently....I had a chance to re-watch this particular one during the time I was coming out of Christianity and into atheism. And my thoughts were very similar to Naturemom's....except I thought 'pomagranate'. That has got to be the most obnoxious fruit to try to eat...

No, it's "Save the World for the Christians" and do away with anything which is not in line with your particular brand of religion. Basically, you're seeking to push your ideology on everyone else. YOU believe the bible is law, but that is simply a belief. You cannot prove that God exists, or that the bible is anything more than a collection of ancient stories written by man.

I can believe that a purple-spotted unicorn with two heads lives in the sky and hands out divine wisdom. But that doesn't mean I should run around trying to pass laws based on what the purple-spotted unicorn "tells" me. Faith in the imaginary and supernatural is disturbingly similar to a serious mental condition.

As for love, I have plenty. I am grateful for life and the ability to give and receive love. I am awed at the mysteries of the world and our universe. I find nature quite moving and wonderous. This has nothing whatsoever to do with believing in a mythical, quarrelsome deity.

It strikes me as lunacy to worship an invisible, imaginary entity out of fear that said invisible, imaginary being might send an invisible, imaginary part body part (the soul) to an invisible, imaginary place called hell. But I'm sure this all sounds quite reasonable to you.

It's not "Save me from myself" it's save "The world from itself."

Christians have the law (as in the Bible) to follow. But we try and prevent moral decline, because with each liberal concession society gets further and further away from God.

The hearts are hardenned, and no amount of love or fear could persuade them back to seeking God.

Ummm... I thought that I clearly came across as condemning the actions of people who DO beat their kids. 1) When referring to the Pearl's books I called it "ill-gotten advice". 2) I mentioned that they advocate hitting babies and said "it is entirely too disturbing". 3) I also commented that "what they're advocating is unacceptable parenting".

The last paragraph of my post is COMPLETELY SARCASTIC and intended to highlight the cruelty of parents who use torture devices on their kids. At no point was I actually giving advice to child abusers. Please do take the time to fully read a post and understand the writer's position before you comment on it in error.

we hate child abuse. your advice is crap (inappropriate). we as teenagers feel that if parents want to discipline us, you should discuss matters with us before physically dealing with us. please talk to your kids and understand them better.
stop giving advice on where to buy $1.00 rods to beat your kids. or i'd give you advice on how to go to court for child abuse.

What the fuck does 'birth language' mean? There were many tribes of people living here that never spoke the first word of English when we first sailed over in our big white ships. In fact there were over 300 languages in this land before it was "discovered". It's too bad YOU can't be fined for being a dumbass.

I'm not going to debate whether this country was founded to be a white nation, or a Christian nation, or a tax-free nation. Everyone these days seems to have an opinion about what America was founded to be and each party is determined to "take it back".

That's all really beside the point. Whether or not America was meant to be a multi-cultural society, it certainly is now. The "Day of the Rope" is a pipe dream. No attempt throughout human history has ever secured this country for the exclusive use of whites. I wouldn't entertain any ideas of grandeur about the possibilities of this happening in the future, either.

Regardless of what you see in the mirror every morning, you are most certainly descended from the same people as every other person on the face of the earth. You have millions of unknown ancestors, each of which contributed to your DNA. Race is a socially invented classification system with no basis in science. Genetically we are 99.9% identical. As a nation, we should not continue to uphold ideas and actions which are bigoted, racist, sexist or which cater to just one religion simply because it's what "used to be done". We can evolve, move forward, and learn from our previous blunders.

See The Power of an Illusion, a great resource in understanding – and overcoming – our conceptions of race.

It wouldn't be necessary for whites to have a lot of children if America had stayed with it's traditional values.

The country was founded by and for whites, it was only when the Jews started implimenting their plan for racial destruction that the white race became an endangered species, making it imperative to increase our numbers.

Race mixing used to be the equivilent of child molestation or murder in many states, with the penalty being death. ( by hanging )

The "Day Of The Rope" is not some kind of futuristic fantasy, it is the way traditional Americans behaved, before the Jew-controlled media started indoctrinating us with egalitarian propaganda and making it politically incorrect to do anything but support the tenets of Jewish supremacism.

I think far too many people have lost sight of this once great nation's history, and think that it was always meant to be a multicultural society when nothing could be further from the truth.

No, of course I didn't let Sony's (rather stunning) incompetence overshadow Womenspirit. It's too bad you couldn't join us! Just as with the camera, I wish I'd received your message before I left. I would have called you into our circles. Perhaps next time you'll be there in the corporeal to join in our fun.

[...] But regardless of these glaring (and yet obviously very important) omissions, my post from last year about this family and their involvement with the White Nationalist movement is getting quite a bit of attention. Talking Puppet Twins is quickly becoming a popular post, even though it was written many months ago. Is it normal for a previously forgotten post to rise from the archives of obscurity?
I love food, too! Enjoying delicious food is a joy in life. The problem is my favorite tastes are rich, fattening foods. It would be okay if I craved spinach and chicken.

I once dated a guy that didn't like food. He hated eating and detested the act of doing so. He often said it would be wonderful if science could truly come up with a meal pill that would take the place of food. I'm not sure what I ever saw in him...

Oooooh, I love my food. If I had to restrict food, life wouldn't be worth living. My hubby is one of those guys who never gets hungry. And he certainly doesn't enjoy his food like I do. But then, he has a bunch of food allergies too.

Not sure where I'm going with this, except to say that I hear what you're saying.

LOLOLOL. See, my best friend and I have navigated these treacherous waters successfully.

We both keep our mouths closed, and only open them to build each other up, weight wise. I'm very thin (skinny as a rail my boss just told me), and she's overweight for a lot of different reasons, only a couple of them that she could control. We're the odd couple, but we've never criticized each other over our weights. She also understands that telling me to "just eat more" probably isn't going to work for me just as telling her to eat less when she already eats normally won't work for her. We also like you decided that society judges enough, that we should create a space where those things didn't seep in.

Great blog, btw.

I posted on my blog about these girls yesterday, but yours is way better.

Yeah, I saw a picture of them on their official site which had them sporting very short Catholic-schoolgirl-style skirts and looking "tough". It's obvious that they're only going to look sluttier down the road.
